Split sixes is an alternate way to score a round with three players. In this game, each hole is worth six players. An outright win (lowest score) nets four points for the winner, with second place taking two.
If the first place is halved, points are divided 3-3. A tie for second splits the second place points, so the final score is 4-1-1. A three way tie for first is 2-2-2.
I suppose you actually could play this with two or four, but the points don’t split quite so neatly.
